Where to refill a CO2 cylinder in NZ
There are a few ways to refill a sparkling water cylinder in New Zealand. Here is how the options compare, and what to check before you hand over an empty.
Your options for refilling a CO2 cylinder
If your machine has run flat, you broadly have three ways to get more gas in New Zealand. Each has trade-offs in convenience, price and certainty about what is actually in the cylinder.
Supermarket cylinder exchange
Many supermarkets run an exchange where you hand in an empty and pay for a full one over the counter, usually around $24 to $26. It is familiar, but it means a trip, a queue, and depending on the store, the swap can be out of stock. You also do not always see the fill weight or certification details.
Specialist retailers and hardware stores
Some appliance and hardware retailers exchange or refill cylinders too. Availability varies by store and brand, and you will want to confirm the cylinder fitting matches your machine before you make the trip.
Online refill by post and door-to-door delivery
The newest option is to order a refill online and have full cylinders delivered, with empties collected by a prepaid courier. This is what we do. You never leave the house, and the cylinders that arrive are filled and certified to a known standard.
What to check before you refill anywhere
- Food-grade and certified. The gas you carbonate drinks with should be food-grade certified CO2, not an unlabelled industrial or adapter source.
- Fill weight. Ask how many grams go in. The industry norm is 400g to 425g. Our refill is a 450g fill, so you get more per cylinder.
- Fitting. Make sure the cylinder matches your machine. Standard 60L screw-in fits SodaStream classic, Aarke, Philips and Breville. SodaStream Quick Connect (the pink click-in) is proprietary and cannot be refilled by third parties.
- Returns. Check whether returning the empty is free and easy, or another errand.

How do I know the CO2 is food-grade?+
Always check that the supplier uses food-grade certified CO2. Ours is food-grade certified and refilled locally in New Zealand, so you know exactly what is going into your drinks.
Which cylinders can be refilled?+
Standard 60L screw-in cylinders used by SodaStream classic, Aarke, Philips and Breville can be refilled. SodaStream Quick Connect (pink click-in) cylinders are proprietary and cannot be refilled by third parties.
How much does a delivered refill cost?+
Refills are $29 per cylinder with a 2-cylinder minimum, plus a one-off $10 refundable deposit. The prepaid return courier is free.
